Syria and Damascus in Middle East Asia

Today we are welcome to visit Syria. The official name of the country is the Syrian Arab Republic. The capital is the beautiful ancient city Damascus.

Syria is bordering Lebanon, the Mediterranean Sea and the island of Cyprus to the west, Israel to the southwest, Jordan to the south, Iraq to the east, and Turkey to the north.

The Euphrates, Syria’s most important river, crosses the country in the east. It is considered to be one of the fifteen states that comprise the so-called “Cradle of Civilization”.

In the Middle Ages the capital Damasque was the centre of a flourishing craft industry, specializing in swords and lace.

The city has some 125 monuments from different periods of its history. One of the most spectacular is the 8th-century Great Mosque of the Umayyads, built on the site of an Assyrian sanctuary.

It was the seat of the Umayyad Empire and a provincial capital of the Mamluk Empire.

The modern state of Syria was formerly a French mandate and attained independence in 1946, but can trace its roots to the fourth millennium BC.

It is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world. Its current population is estimated at about 1.67 million.

The major cities of the countr are Damascus, Aleppo, Hama, Homs, Latakia where are many things to visit with nice fesitivals, hotels and restaurants.

The northwest part of the country bordering the Mediterranean is fairly green and at the seaside are nice beaches.
